3. Llovizna en Madrid
Lluvia ligera en la madrugada.
Pocos viandantes en la niebla.
Edificios centenarios, milenarios
3. Drizzling in Madrid
An early morning drizzle
Few brave the mist
Shadows of centuries-old buildings
tell the tale of mutable European civilization
Here are melded the heritage of Rome and Islam alike
The footprints of history have fallen heavily here
feeding the imaginings of all who came after
Snatches of good times remembered
those of harder times banished
I take in the shadows of lofty buildings
as the dazzling rising sun
creates irrepressible resplendence
An inevitable echo to the Dark Ages
Homage to the past
but one needn’t get too caught up in it
Don Quixote tilting at windmills
and the adventures of Don Juan
of these I recall but a little
Of arena-bound bulls? Much more
