This paper is to conduct an investigation of one of the sociolinguistic competences, paying compliment, by comparing and contrasting the awareness of complimenting speech act, such as topics, functions, frequency, objects, and linguistic forms from two groups, American English speakers and Taiwanese/Chinese L2 learners living in the U.S. The age range of participants is 20-30, and the social status is college and graduate students. The similarities and differences of the results may serve as references for ESL instructors and L2 Taiwanese/Chinese learners who wish to pay closer attention to cross cultural communication and the pragmatics surrounding paying compliments. |
