Frustration with current materials
I have felt frustrated over the years with the teaching materials available to teach technical writing. My biggest issue has been that textbooks about technical writing are too difficult for students to understand.
Motivation for writing
I wrote a book which I use in my own class at NCTU about technical writing for Taiwanese researchers. I have simplified the concepts and English as much as possible to reduce the pain that comes with learning technical writing. The book has 16 units which cover the writing, revising and submitting of an academic paper. In an 16 week semester the middle week and final week are used for exams.
Each unit includes the following sections.
How to write the...
Each section of the paper is explained through a series of questions. By answering these questions students can collect the information to write the paper. Format guidelines are presented for the introduction, methods, results, discussion, abstract, citations, and cover letter.
Academic phrases for each section of the paper
Dozens of example sentences are given which researchers can cut, paste, and modify when writing their papers
Common Taiwanese errors and how to correct them
Every week reviewer comments are used to identify Taiwanese writing errors. These errors are explained and corrected.
Simple punctuation point
Short, fundamental rules of English grammar are simply explained with examples.
The writing process
Tips are given about how to stay motivated, productive and efficient in writing by developing good writing habits.
Tips for journal submission
Editor, reviewer comments, and journal submission guidelines are used to identify publication strategies. Avoid common submission mistakes such as angering your reviewers and letting them know your paper was previously rejected.
Inappropriate vocabulary and improvements
Taiwanese writers use words and phrases which are easily misunderstood in technical writing. Stronger substitute words or phrase are suggested.
