《The Goat of Magalies》(開場片段)
The sun came down thick as syrup, slow and gold, pooling on the corrugated roofs until the valley seemed to sweat. The red dirt road to the Botha farm shimmered, the heat bending it just enough to make distance feel unreliable. Dust coated the fence posts; even the goats had taken on the color of the road. Every-thing hummed—wire, grass, skin, thought.
Marie ran barefoot through the dry cornfield, her feet stinging, her legs powdered red. She carried a tin cup of water from the windpump, careful not to spill it. The cup was too big for her hand, the handle pressing into her palm. It meant she was useful. Behind her, goats bleated and knocked the trough.
Her father’s voice carried from the next paddock, calm and even. “Marie-kind, not there, love.”
She kept going. One goat stood a little apart, black and gray, chewing slowly. The others shifted when she approached, this one didn’t. The farmhands called him Bok. In the glare, his eyes seemed to rest on her, not following, just present. She noticed the look lingered after she turned away, then forgot about it, the way you forget a dis-comfort once it passes. When the light changed, his shape struck her as briefly off—shoulders set wrong, stillness held too care-fully—an impression without meaning, already thinning as it formed.
She stepped closer, water sloshing. Bok lowered his head, paused. Nothing happened.
Her mother’s voice cut through the heat.“Marie! Come inside.”
