本論文The efficiency of secondary schools in England: The relationship between school resources and pupil 《英國中等學校資源與學生發展之研究》主要以英國中等學校為探討對象，研究教育投入（財政資源）和產出（學生表現）的效率關係及成本效益，藉由相關的分析結果來評價學校。

ABSTRACT

The objectives of this thesis are to investigate the relationship between inputs and outputs in education and to evaluate the efficiency of schools. The study compares grant-maintained and LEA schools in England in terms of their cost-effectiveness, in this case the relationship between financial resources and pupil performance. Both quantitative and qualitative analyses are employed. For the quantitative analysis, regression techniques and descriptive statistics are employed. For the qualitative analysis, content analysis is used. All the quantitative data for the school inputs and outputs were obtained from the Office for Standards in Education inspection reports and the Department for Education and Employment. Both longitudinal and cross-sectional analyses are used to investigate the relationship between the financial inputs and pupils’ academic performance. The statistical results using the cross-sectional analysis show that there is no obvious correlation between inputs and outputs. Content analysis is also employed to provide further results to explore the relationship between inputs and outputs. It suggests that the pupils’ academic performance could be affected by a number of factors, such as the quality of teaching, the schools’ administration system, family characteristics and pupil characteristics, while the financial factor is just one. This has suggested a possible reason why there is no common agreement among economists on the question of whether there is a relationship between inputs and outputs.
